What you need to know


 

So I know this seems reductive, but bear with me: the only thing you need to do on your IM Sub-I is know everything about your patients.

At first glance, this may seem like an impossible task, and also like it leaves out some of the other stuff (when and where to be, how to give an oral presentation, what is needed for that stellar letter of recommendation…). My thesis is that if you keep knowing everything about your patients as your guiding principle, you will meet (and exceed) expectations in other domains. For example: 

  • What time should I arrive each day? (Re-framing in the “know everything” model, this becomes: How long do you need to interview and examine all of your patients, to review the consultant notes from the previous day, to check in with Nursing about their overnight courses, and to review their available labs and imaging?)
